About Newark Mencap
Imagine being told your child would never be allowed to go to school! This happened to a Newark couple Denis and Joyce mills many years ago. They began to search for people in a similar position to them and began meeting and sharing the caring of the children which gave them a much needed break from their 24/7 care giving.
After the formation of National Mencap in 1946 pressure was put on councils and government to provide services and financial help. Newark Mencap was created and with fundraising and local help they were able to buy a property on Whitfield Street. This became the centre for Newark Mencap for many years until the move 10 years ago to the Congreational Church on London Road. Over sixty years later Newark Mencap continues to work with energy and enthusiasm to improve the lives of children and adults with a learning disability and to support their parent and carers.
Behind the scenes - The Trustees
The Charities activities are overseen by four volunteer trustees. They set the strategy and ensure that proper controls are in place to cover the care of our clients and that financial controls are in place.
All our trustees either have direct experience of looking after people with learning disabilities, some as parents, or have extensive business knowledge. This experience coupled with our professional service delivery team, help ensure we run the charity for the sole benefit of our clients.
